A Dream called Seoul National University

Today, I would like to share with you a scholarship essay that worked of a foreign freshman who got into the most prestigious school of Korea SNU last year.

“My plan of study is heading to the theme of Seoul National University, where the experts are sharing the latest and most impressive innovations in modern science and their applications to the real life. I can feel a smoldering flame inside my chest since plenty of ideas has just came to my mind and hopefully struggling to be materialized someday. As a young lady who’ve never stopped thinking of a better life for everybody and how to contribute to the Great Innovation of human race, I proactively create another path of my life which leads to up my becoming a change-oriented leader, so as to make a positive influence on people’s old way of thinking. Since I found that Business Administration is not only intriguing but also a good fit for my career objective, I would like to further my college life to lay the necessary foundation to continue my educational journey with this captivating major.

It's not hard to get into Seoul National University, as long as you have a dream.

In Malaysia, I am completing my junior year at the University of Malay and will graduate with a BSc in Economics in July, 2013. At school, my concentration is in International Economics. My academic work has strengthened my research and writing skills as well as my understanding of the economics, business growth and social development. Call me eccentric, but I’ve always thought libraries and classes are some of the noisiest places on earth. By taking classes with a wide range of courses in Economics, I received an overview of how an economy thrives, main factors affecting a national economy’s development and governmental policies to prevent economic downturn and keep it safe and sound in the era of globalization. As being provided with that necessary base for further exploration of this rich major, I’ve been devoting my effort and endeavor to reading about how enterprises interact with each other in market, how they create value, deliver their images effectively to customer in a competitive environment. However, what excites me the most is the relationship among Business Administration, Technological Innovation and Education. By pursuing a B.A study, I can have chance to train myself become a potential leader who leads the change of various aspects of this world. However, no change can be made without technological innovation and well-educated human resource. I regarded Korea as a ‘promising land” where I could freely immerse myself in the upward flowing stream of technological advance in order to fill up all of empty spaces in my knowledge and expand my network further to meet new talented people in preparation for a long-nurtured own start-up business: Establishing an e-school comprising high-quality online lessons with the main purpose of providing womankind with necessary knowledge and skills to face with challenges in modern life and live happily. This idea also emphasizes on the spirit of fighting human trafficking epidemic and gender discrimination in the area. Education, in general, can intersect what seems to be destiny and change a person’s trajectory. I believe that with appropriate application, Educational Technology, normally known as e-learning can transform traditional education methods, particularly for those who are labeled as under performing, underdeveloped or hopeless, since these people are thus vulnerable to social evils and easily become victims of human trafficking, which is not only disgrace to humanity but also brings many negative effects on the whole economy. As my flight to Korea lands, the flight to my destiny will land off.

A good songwriter weaves together all the disparate tones, beats and lyrics of the song into a melody that organizes but does not constrain. I am composed of many passions, many faces, many reflections, thus an academic-oriented life is not colorful enough for me. I spent nearly half of my lifetime involving myself in volunteer social activities, they naturally become important parts of my DNA. Holding a strong emotion toward small and simple actions people take every day can magically change other people’s whole lives, I set up a student-driven international volunteer organization called Malaysia Work Camp, volunteers from China and Japan who are interested in cross-border charitable activities, gathered up to support the poor, especially disabled people and promoting development of Malaysia’s remote areas. Thanks to great support from Malaysian organizations, sponsors and NGOs, VWC has been successful in a lot of projects. Thus, on the way of development, we need to expand our network through attracting more participants from countries other than Malaysia, Japan and China. In the past, I luckily had opportunities to work with Koreans in some projects, and they placed a deep impression on me since they were very friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic about social activities, always willing to lend their hand to help. For that reason, I’m taking this occasion to go to Korea, not only as a nearly-graduated student who want to define her ambition clearly, but also a young ambassador who has the mission to connect youths from Korea and Malaysia through charitable activities, which help break down any cultural barrier between two nations and contribute to the mutual sustainable development.

In summary, I view this scholarship program is a great privilege for me to present at SNU as a potential student, expectedly a fit addition to The SNU Spirit: A tradition of excellence, Honoring Public Service, Pioneering Knowledge. The next stage of my life in SNU must be extremely meaningful to me because it is promisingly the critical link to my life-long career in empowering individuals through educational reform. I do believe that this challenge, even may bring about not simple hardship, still lightens we up with imaginations, enables us to go farther than we’ve ever thought. And I can’t resist to expose the fact that I’m looking for a university which is committed to diversifying its student body and faculty, fostering global exchange, and promoting path-breaking research in all fields of knowledge. I believe that I have found that school in Seoul.”
