My Rubber Duck Experience in Seoul
It’s been a really whimsical day for me, as I am finally back, living in Korea. Through a special opportunity, I became a part of the wonderful rubber duck project experience. Well, in what circumstance, was I able to know of this Rubber Duck epiphany? Thanks to my Korean friends who spammed my Facebook and Instagram page with rubber duck pictures, I found a big rubber duck that was visiting the big pond of the Jamsil area. And as soon, as I landed from the airport, I always have wanted to meet the enormous creature that made a fuss in the streets of Jamsil in Seoul.
And so the journey come to an end…
Actually the 26×20×32 meters (85×66×105 ft) rubber duckie, weighing over 600 kg (1,300 lbs) was created by Dutch Artist Florentijn Hofman and started its journey in 2007. It has visited numerous cities around the world, and has now come to bring happiness among the Korean folks.
According to Hofman, as I quote:
“The Rubber Duck knows no frontiers, it doesn’t discriminate people and doesn’t have a political connotation. The friendly, floating Rubber Duck has healing properties: it can relieve mondial tensions as well as define them. The rubber duck is soft, friendly and suitable for all ages”
As per the words of the creator, people of all ages and nationalities that are in Seoul have come to visit the said wonder. Truly as you try to visit the park, along the path where it leads are numerous spectators, ranging from group of friends, lovers and of course little kids with their families.
Of course, the rubber duckie was placed amongst the array of Lotte World Malls. It was because the company was the one who invited the said famous duck, to celebrate its newly created mall. In one of the views, the front of the Rubber Duck and the backdrop of the famous Lotte World can be seen.
Also another man made mayhem kinda scene was often seen in this new temporary landmark with the sudden boom of self-pods. Well, no one wouldn’t miss a chance to have their own 셀카 (Self-Camera) with our huge yellow friend. That is why around the park’s edges, people flock to have a good view and even more, a good shot of the duck with them. One by one, each would take out their self-pods, clipping their smart phones and then would start the battle of taking pictures along the side. And amongst the short ones, the pod was really useful.
But the true significance is that once you visit the duck, There will be no hate, no worry or no anxiety, but only smiles as you look at the enormous creature floating in the pod. And like Koreans, may it be lovers or little kids, have found peace and joy as they take pictures of the rubber monster that unanimously just smiles throughout the day.
Fathers who were busy at work during the weekdays, finally had the chance to bring their little kiddos to play alongside the duck. With this opportunity, they have spent family time among their love ones.
Truly, not just a duck for nothing, come and visit the floating creature until it goes to another city.
It is situated in one of the parks facing the still being constructed Lotte Tower and the Lotte World Mall. And paths and banners can also surely bring you to where it is. Try to wear warm clothes as well, as the weather has started to get cold. No worries since there are no admission fees and surely you can meet the journeying duck for free.
